DRUG CLASS: Anti infective
MECHANISM OF ACTION:
Nitrofurontoin : Is activated inside bacteria by reduction via the flavoprotein nitrofurantoin reductase to unstable metabolites, which disrupt ribosomal RNA, DNA and other intracellular components. It is bactericidal, especially to bacteria present in acid urine.
INDICATIONS: Asymptomatic bacteriuria (≥105 CFU per mL) in pregnancy, Cystitis, acute uncomplicated or acute simple cystitis, Cystitis, prophylaxis for recurrent infection.
